putting car key into the ignition Among vehicle owners, there is a shared frustration over maintenance repair needs. When your car or truck malfunctions, it can throw a wrench in your plans for the day. How are you supposed to drive the kids to school and get to work if the car won’t start? If you’ve ever been in this situation or simply want to prepare for worst, we share six of the most common reasons why your car isn’t starting.

The Battery Is Dead

If you hear a clicking noise when you turn the key in the ignition, the car battery is likely dead. When it makes no noise at all, the battery will appear very corroded when you look under the hood. If the battery is in good working condition, it might need a simple recharge. Otherwise, you’ll need to replace it.

The Ignition Switch Failed

The ignition switch in your vehicle sends an energy signal to the battery when activated. A failure has occurred if the starter doesn’t spark and begin burning gas. In this situation, you could be facing an electrical short that needs maintenance, or you’ll have to replace the ignition switch entirely.

The Alternator Malfunctioned

While your car is running, the alternator charges its battery. If you hear a low growling noise, the alternator is failing. To test the voltage of your alternator, a volt or multimeter is used. The voltage should be at least 13 volts to charge your car battery properly.

The Fuel System Is Blocked

If the engine cranks like it’s about to start but fails to do so, the problem could be a blocked filter. To clean the filters, be sure to clamp the fuel lines before removing them to avoid a spill. If it’s a pump failure, you’ll need to replace that part.

The Starter Is Damaged

As the name suggests, your car will not start without a functioning starter relay. If you hear a high-pitched screeching noise as you turn the key in the ignition, that’s a telltale sign of a faulty starter in need of service.

Impact of Wet Weather

On a rainy day or when snow melts in abundant sunshine, dampness can seep into the distributor cap. Of all six issues, this is the easiest “quick fix.” Use clean solvent to wash the cap out and dry thoroughly before screwing it back in place.
