hand starting a car with the keyWhen you get in the car for work or to run errands, the last thing you want is for your key to get stuck in the ignition. Understand what could be happening and why your key won’t move.

Reasons for a Stuck Key

You may be unable to turn or remove your key for one of the following reasons:

1. Wrong Gear

Typically, safety mechanisms only let you remove your key once the car is in Park. Before attempting to move your key, press down on the brake, pull up the parking brake, then move the transmission gear to Park.

2. Locked Steering Wheel

If you turned off the engine while still moving the steering wheel or pushed it too far after your last drive, the ignition cylinder can get locked. To remove the key, make sure your vehicle is in Park, then jiggle the key back and forth.

3. Dead Battery

A weak or dead car battery can lock the ignition cylinder and prevent the vehicle from starting. Use jumper cables to try and revive the battery, so you can attempt to remove the key.

4. Dirty Key

The debris clinging to the surface of your key can prevent proper contact with the ignition. If the key won’t turn, remove and clean it off before trying the process again.

5. Damaged Key

Using your key as a lever or bottle opener can chip the metal. This damage may result in misalignment between your key and the ignition system’s spring-loaded pins or jam its tumbler mechanism.

6. Damaged Ignition Cylinder

The ignition system’s tumbler can collapse or experience damage, preventing you from turning the key once inserted or pulling it out. You can try gently jiggling the key or lubricating the lock to remove any debris that could have the key stuck.

What You Can Do

If you find yourself unable to turn your car key in the ignition:

  • Gently turn the key back and forth while moving your steering wheel. Avoid any sudden movements, as you may accidentally break off the top of the key.
  • Clean out the ignition cylinder, spraying compressed air or a lubricant like WD-40.
  • Unlock the steering wheel by turning it back to its proper position.
  • Move the gear selector again until the transmission is clearly in Park.
