There comes a point when you’ll notice a squeaking or a clanking or wonder why you hear a rumbling from under the hood. A strange noise is never a good sign, but so you can attempt to pinpoint the issue before seeking service, here’s a guide to common sounds from your car and what they could be:

Thumping – This could be a flat tire when you hear it at both slow and fast speeds. Or, if the sound comes from under the hood, there’s a chance a belt has gotten loose.

Buzzing – The sound could be coming from the exhaust manifold gasket. This sign requires attention right away, as, not only will the manifold become damaged, carbon monoxide may start leak, too.

Ticking – This sound can mean a few things. One, the U-joint is loose or on its last legs, or two, your vehicle has non-lubricated tappets resulting from low or dirty oil.

Squeaking from the Wheels – If such a sound comes from this area, your brake pads have worn down beyond the acceptable thickness, or there may be a defective universal joint, prop shaft, or rear differential.

Hissing – When this sound comes from under the hood, a line or fitting is loose or broken. This sound may occur in conjunction with the check engine light turning on.

Clunking – A ball joint is about to wear out. So you don’t exacerbate the issue, avoid potholes and other bumps in the road, until your car is serviced. If the sound occurs when you brake, however, your car may have worn steering components, a disc brake caliper issue, or damaged hardware.

Grumbling – A water pump bearing is about to break, causing a leak.

Knocking – When this sound comes from the engine, it often means the crankshaft bearings are worn, something’s wrong with the connecting rods, or a bolt is loose.

Thud – Depending upon the location of the sound, it could indicate a loose pulley or exhaust pipe.

Rumbling – Your wheel bearings are experiencing wear and tear. If the sound comes from under the car, your exhaust system may need repairs, as a hole may be present or a pipe could be loose.

Whining – Your transmission is starting to wear down. If it sounds more like grinding, your system could have a worn clutch or internal damage.

A strange sound seldom means your car is all right. At any of these signs, give DaSilva Auto Body a call to schedule a diagnostic appointment.
