Once spring rolls around, it becomes priority to perform maintenance on your vehicle. Snow, road salt and cold weather place wear and tear on your car and can affect its appearance. Along with standard repairs, consider getting some detailing done in the maintenance process.
Clean Out the Interior
- Carpeting and Upholstery: During the winter season, these both absorb any dirt and snow you track in. Have them thoroughly washed and shampooed to get out any rock salt, mud and dirt.
- Windows: While we often wash the outside to remove pollen and other debris, remember the inside needs just as much attention.
- The Console: Dirt and other fine debris accumulate here too. The dashboard surfaces and navigation system should be carefully wiped down to clean all glass and screens.
- The Trunk: Clean out anything that’s been sitting here all winter and vacuum out any dirt and debris. Then, have the spare tire looked at before you plan any lengthy drives.
Exterior
- Give it a Wash: Although washing your car every month during winter helps to clean off the road salt, many drivers forget. In response, be sure to schedule a thorough washing at the start of spring to get rid of salt and grime in the undercarriage.
- The Wheels: Don’t forget about the wheels. Ideally, the hubcaps should be removed and washed, and the wheel wells and tires thoroughly cleaned.
- Waxing: Ideally, you had your car waxed before the start of the winter season. However, weather and salt likely wore this coating down. Aside from giving your car a fresh appearance, it acts as a blocker against moisture, which can lead to rust and other issues.
- Tire Pressure: Along with washing their surface, make sure your tires are properly inflated. Because colder weather can cause your tire pressure to decrease, you likely filled your tires at least once during winter. Warmer weather has the opposite effect and many drivers end up over-filling in spring, which affects tire stability and your car’s fuel economy. As a result, make sure your car’s tire pressure matches the manufacturer’s specification at the start of the season.
- Check Your Wipers: Cold weather may cause your blades to crack. Ice buildup is also responsible for a significant amount of wear and tear. Because you’ll need them for the next rain storm, have them inspected. If they’re streaking, your car may need a new set.
